Intro

Refit is the fashionable paper that contributes to the principles of the circular economy by utilising cotton and wool waste as material ingredients. This ecological paper has a unique appearance and comprises two lines. The first line, called Cotton, features three soothing colours produced from discarded cotton fibres during yarn production. The second line, Wool, showcases two rich dark colours with contrasting white wool fibres. Altogether, Refit uses 15% textile by-products on its surface, to create a distinctive and environmentally conscious paper.

Refit, is the most recent addition to Paper from our Echosystem, the Favini collection that encompasses the most environmentally conscious papers. These materials showcase exceptional sustainability features, along with distinctive textures and vibrant colours that are sure to captivate.

For its inclusion into Paper from our Echosystem collection, we ensure that Refit is guaranteed:

  • The emissions have been measured and completely neutralized.
  • Refit’s production is powered by self-generated renewable energy sources.
  • Demonstrates its dedication to being environmentally friendly, the product proudly showcases its FSC™ certification, emphasising its recyclable and biodegradable qualities.

WOOL
Unique Ingredients of Refit: Wool

The distinctive features of Refit Cotton

The uniqueness of Refit lies in its ingredients. In darker shades, the vital element is wool; but not virgin wool.

Instead, they are the fibres that are discarded due to their short length or other unsuitable characteristics, such as fibre escape during textile formation or from the machinery, gathering alongside the machines or captured by suction and filtering systems.

These fibres are recovered and are incorporated into the mixture, reducing the amount of virgin cellulose used.

This makes Refit paper sustainable and a key player in industrial symbiosis practices.

Cotton Wool: Refit visual book

Intro

Given the nature of our Refit product, the visual book could only draw inspiration from the world of fashion. The new Refit visual book is an editorial project designed with the same attention to detail as a high-end garment. Favini especially wanted this booklet to inspire designers and to tell the concept of the making of the Refit paper.

Refit Wool, with its characteristic surface fluff that contrasts with the dark hues of the paper, although it may not suitable for litho print, but with hot stamping, screen printing, and letterpress, the results are excellent. Refit Cotton imparts the emotion of “fresh laundry” and is suitable for all the main print techniques. But why not also consider alternative, unconventional techniques, such as embossing or scorching!

The Concept Phase: The Theme and Connection with Refit

With a paper designed for the fashion and luxury packaging industry, our visual book could only draw inspiration from the world of fashion. The visual book titled “Cotton Wool” revolves around the concept of creating an outfit, consisting of a cotton shirt, a wool sweater, and a pair of denim jeans, with each element incorporating the raw materials of the eco-sustainable Refit paper, wool and cotton.

The individual items of clothing are sub-divided within the visual book, with each process highlighted by a different print technique on the paper.

The Production Phase: Unconventional Techniques and Precious Workmanship

Starting from the cover, we see that this editorial project is unique.

The cover made with Refit Cotton Grey resembles the street style of “worn” denim garments worn by different generations.

And it has undergone a similar treatment: The black marks and frayed edges are the result of the embossing process with black ink in an industrial laundry.

Even the binding of “Cotton Wool” is made to remind us of the seams of jeans’ pockets, and is created by Singer sewing, while the title printed on the cover was made with an embossed blind emboss, which is often seen as the leather patch on the back of the 5-pocket waistband.

Traditional and alternative techniques were used for the text pages. For example, the tag made on Refit Cotton Pearl is inspired by the industrial processes of clothing and trouser labels: First, it was washed and embossed, then the word “Refit” was hot-stamped with a 420°C scald.

The two versions of Favini’s eco-friendly paper, Wool and Cotton, stem from the same idea of creative reuse of textile waste, but they have different characteristics, such as touch sensation and printability.

Refit Cotton yields excellent results with offset printing, that we can admire in the visual book cards printed on Refit Cotton White and Cotton Pearl.

Although it is better not to print by litho on Refit Wool, but with hot stamping, dry embossing, and screen printing, superb prints are obtained.

The sewing needles are printed on Refit Wool Black with a combination of hot foil stamping and screen printing. The result offers a 3D, minimalist, and impactful effect.

Six buttons and three different print techniques: The buttons were printed using hot foil stamping, blind embossing, and screen printing on Refit Wool Blue.

The blind emboss on Refit Wool Black recreates the embroidery on a fabric. The embossed print plays with the residual wool on the surface of the paper, inviting us to touch and perceive the design not only with our eyes but also with our hands.

How will you treat Refit eco-friendly paper sheets? You will find the “washing instructions” label made with Refit Cotton White, but this is just to provoke!

All Favini projects are fascinating, but this one is particularly special because it is a very innovative product with so much potential.” Regarding Favini’s approach to printing, Gail continued: “They enjoy experimenting with printing and see it as a true craft, as designers, it is something to be excited about, and I imagine that other designers will be excited about what they can do with the paper.
